We asked actor Eddie Shields about his past experiences with Shakespeare. Check out what he said!


 

What was your first Shakespearean role as an actor?  How old were you?  What do you remember about the experience? 
When I was 19, studying in London, we did a production of Comedy of Errors where I was Antipholus of Syracuse. I remember is crying nearly every rehearsal. I didn’t know why I had to speak in iambic pentamer. I didn’t know why I had to “walk this way” or “walk that way” as per the directors commands. After lots of tears and out bursts, I decided to suck it up and while my cast mates would hit the streets of London every night, I stayed in my flat and studied. I studied and studied and studied. Eventually after our first performance our director walked slowly up to me and said
“That was pretty good…for an American”. I’ll take it.

What’s your favorite Shakespeare play and why? 
It changes every month. Thanks to SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE this month it’s Romeo and Juliet!

What is your dream Shakespeare role and why?
Richard III hands down. I don’t know why, I just know I need to play him. The why will come after.

What is the most unusual or funniest thing that happened to you or happened onstage while acting in a Shakespeare play? 
During the Michael Chekhov festival in CT, I had to step in for someone last minute playing Malvolio. I had three days to learn that whole part with no rehearsals and meeting no one in the cast. I wish I could tell you how it went but it was so traumatizing, I think it blocked it out.
